Split Rock is kind of a tricky spot to catch. The river is usually rising or dropping rather quickly when levels come into range for split rock proper, with only a day or two window of opportunity being common. But if you can catch it, it is the best playspot in the area. Great eddy service, and beautiful scenery. It is located at the takeout of the popular index to splitrock run on the Skykomish, and has easy access for park and play. The owners of the land at the takeout have however gotten fed up with the abuse of their land by the general public, and have posted no trespassing signs. It's up to you if you want to tread on their land, but if you do, please be discrete about it and don't trash the place. In fact, if you see trash, pick it up!
Levels:
>6500cfs - Cant say from personal experience, but i hear first it gets a bit trashier, then greens out, then it's gone...
5000-6000cfs - (Split Rock Proper) Prime time for experienced playboaters, or intermediates looking for a wild ride ; ) At these flows, a sizeable wave forms that surges from a green wave, to a pretty stompin foampile at the rivers discretion. The funny water behind the wave is a boily mess at these flows and can give you a hard time, but the eddy is huge, so no worries there.
4000-5000cfs - The attitude of the wave changes. A little more flushy, friendlier foam pile, not quite as trashy, but less potential for big moves to be done. A great level for learning to surf, and working on technique. Flows down toward the 4000 range will make for a flushier wave.
< 4000cfs - The wave keeps getting smaller, and tends to green out more, but is pretty much there down to the slightest trickle of a flow. Many peoples first great surfs have been at these flows. A great place to learn!
Here is some video of the wave in the 5800-5600cfs range. PRIMO!
